1930 World Cup – Uruguay

This poster is from the very first World Cup in history. FIFA, then presided over by Frenchman Jules Rimet, chose Uruguay to celebrate the centenary of the country's independence. Thirteen teams participated in the competition, nine American and four European, in July 1930 in Montevideo. Uruguay won the final against Argentina (4-2). It was an invitational tournament, and not all teams had accepted the invitation.
