World Cup 98

1998 World Cup – France

Montpellier hosted the World Cup in spectacular fashion. The main event was the renovation and expansion of the stadium, increasing its capacity to 35,500 seats, and the decision by Georges Frêche, the mayor of Montpellier, to rename the entire stadium, Stade de la Mosson – Mondial 98. In the same spirit, a "Mondial 98 Avenue" was created along the road leading to Odysseum. Michel Platini, co-chairman of the organizing committee and frequently present in Montpellier to oversee the construction, was able to appreciate this. Finally, the World Cup Village, located in the heart of the city, served as the gathering place for fans from all over the world.
