32- France national team jersey

Michel Platini

1978 World Cup – Argentina

“I’ll swim to Buenos Aires if I have to!” Michel Platini refused to mix sport and politics, and with this statement, he rejected the call in France to boycott the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, a tournament marked by Videla’s military junta. At 23, he was eager to participate in his first World Cup. France was in a very tough group with Argentina and Italy. But Michel Platini, a star player in the making, donned the French jersey against the eventual winners of the tournament and even scored a goal against them (2-1).
