Albert Batteux

1954 World Cup Qualifiers – Switzerland

In Montpellier, the Albert Batteux sports complex is the Garosud multi-sports center, home to the MUC (Montpellier University Club). But Batteux himself was a former player and one of the most prominent coaches in French football. He is largely responsible for the highly offensive and spectacular "champagne football" of Stade de Reims, which, under his guidance, won five French league titles and reached two European finals against Real Madrid. In the World Cup, Albert Batteux was primarily the coach of the French national team that achieved a remarkable third-place finish in 1958 in Sweden. The jersey shown here is from a youth team he coached.
