In Brazil, the French team exited the competition in the quarterfinals after a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Germany. After thrashing Brazil 7-1 on their home turf, the Mannschaft went on to win the tournament, defeating Argentina 1-0. President Louis Nicollin was able to acquire Bastian Schweinsteiger's complete final kit; Schweinsteiger was named man of the match and would later become captain of the German national team.
