1958 World Cup – Sweden
France enjoyed a magnificent run in Sweden in 1958, reaching the semi-finals of the competition. This edition was marked by Just Fontaine's 13 goals, a record that has never been equaled. Coached by Albert Batteux, France lost to Pelé's Brazil (5-2), with Pelé scoring a hat-trick. France won the third-place match against Germany, thanks to Fontaine's four goals. Jean Vincent (later the coach of FC Nantes) formed the prestigious attacking trio of Stade de Reims with Fontaine and Piantoni.
